Do both of us need to be online at the same time?

Yes. Files move directly between devices, so the person sharing a file has to be online and running Mirall while you download it — there's no server holding a copy in the middle. You don't have to sit and watch it, though: if either of you drops off, the transfer pauses and picks up where it left off the next time you're both online.

Will Mirall work on my network?

Almost always, and with no setup — Mirall finds its own way through home and office routers, so there are no ports to forward and nothing to configure. The exception is a network that blocks the traffic it needs to connect two devices directly, which some strict corporate firewalls and VPNs do. If a connection won't come up, the Connection row on your Profile page tells you what Mirall can see about your setup, so you're not guessing.

What happens when I'm offline?

Files you've already downloaded stay on your device — they're yours, and they work offline. Other members can still see what you've shared, but they can't download it from you until you're back. Downloading a file doesn't make you a second source for it either: the member who shared a file is the one who serves it, so while they're offline it's marked “Owner offline” and waits for them.

Is it really encrypted?

Yes. Every connection between devices is end-to-end encrypted, so nobody can see your files or metadata in transit, and there's no central server that could be breached. On your own device, Mirall's records are encrypted at rest and your identity key is wrapped using your operating system's keychain, so copying Mirall's data folder gives up neither.

How do I invite someone to a space?

A space gives you an invite link. Getting it to the other person is up to you — Mirall never sends it on your behalf, so pass it through a channel you trust, ideally an end-to-end encrypted messenger. Treat the link like a key: anyone holding it can ask to join, and it works until the expiry you chose. Approval is the backstop — by default you still let each person in yourself, so a link that gets forwarded doesn't quietly hand someone access.

What languages does Mirall support?

Five: English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian. Mirall picks up your OS language on first launch, and you can switch at any time.

Are there file size limits?

No. Mirall is built for the files that break everything else — hundreds of gigabytes, or a single file into the terabytes, transfer like any other. Content is streamed in chunks rather than uploaded as a whole, there are no size caps, and there's no per-GB bill. Speed depends on your network and the sender's upload bandwidth. File count is a different matter: a space holds up to 100 individual files, and a shared folder up to 5,000.

What happens if a large transfer is interrupted?

It carries on where it stopped. Mirall verifies each chunk as it arrives and keeps a record of your progress, so a dropped connection, a closed laptop, or the sender going offline costs you the interruption — not the transfer. You can pause and resume by hand, and when a file finishes, Mirall confirms its contents match the sender's original exactly.

Is Mirall open source?

Yes. Mirall is licensed under the AGPL-3.0 and the source is on GitHub. That's what makes the rest of this page checkable: you don't have to take our word for how your files are handled — you can read the code and see for yourself.

Mirall is free for personal use, and we plan to offer additional paid services in the future.

How do I keep Mirall up to date?

You don't have to. Once installed, Mirall updates itself in the background and the new version is live the next time you launch — no reinstalls, no installer downloads.
